It’s Science Fiction Day, so here’s my midseason mini review for The Expanse, Season 5.
Exceptional character depth and portrayals are still a staple in this story.
Amos (Wes Chatham) and Naomi (Dominique Tipper) take the spotlight with a deeper dive on their backstories.
Some minor characters are flat, but in a cast so large, they don’t detract too much, nor do they hang around long.
There is a bit of meandering to get characters where they need to be, and some shallow motivations to get there, but the resulting conflicts are, for the most part, excellent.
The superbly-edited, intense action sequences we love are still here! Most notable are scenes in the Razorback. Such a cool ship design!
(Not a Razorback gif, sadly)
And Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Need I say more? (I will, because she's fantastic. Still blunt, intelligent and hilarious, and getting shit done even when other people ignore her advice.)
So far, it's a 3.5/5, and given the stellar endings of their previous seasons, I can't wait to see how it all comes crashing together in the second half.
What do you think of season 5 so far? Let me know in the comments below.
